Austin, Flora Jessie (Laidlaw) –Skye Glen, Inverness County, passed away peacefully in her home in Skye Glen on her 85th Birthday, Monday, December 21, 2009. Born in Troy, she was a daughter of the late Murdock and Annie (MacKinnon) Laidlaw. Flora was predeceased by her husband of 54 years, Clair Austin. A former school teacher and farmer’s wife, Flora recently received a 60 year pin, marking membership in the Order of the Eastern Star. She enjoyed a good cup of hot, hot tea; her friends at the Whycocomagh Seniors Club and her work with the UCW. She is survived by her sons, Jim (Ferne) and Darryl both of Skye Glen daughters, Debbie, Chester; Merlene (Gary Kenward), Prospect; and Alison (Brian Illsley), Berwick; sister, Anne (George) Hanrahan, Vancouver, B.C.; 14 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren. Flora was predeceased by her son, Bradley, in infancy; granddaughter Jennifer in infancy and brothers, George and Ernest. Visitation will be held 2-9 p.m. Tuesday in Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, Whycocomagh. Funeral service will be held 3 p.m. Wednesday, December 23, in Stewart United Church with Rev. Donna Tourneur officiating. Burial in Stewartdale Cemetery. Memorial donations in memory of Flora may be made to Bonny Lea Farm, P.O. Box 560, Chester, N.S. B0J 1K0 or Stewartdale Cemetery.
